Hey Traveler
Our History
While staying at the Juneau International Hostel, you may wonder about our roots. Our history blends the essence of the hostel experience with the unique story of our house, brought to life by the countless individuals who have invested their time and energy. Their commitment has ensured the hostel’s continuity and upheld the high standards that define us, making every stay a part of our ongoing legacy.
About Us: Juneau International Hostel’s Journey
Since 1967, the Juneau International Hostel has been a nonprofit cornerstone of affordable travel in Alaska, offering a welcoming space for adventurers from around the world. Our story began with Judy and Frank Maier, who, inspired by their European hostel experiences, partnered with the Methodist Church to open Juneau’s first hostel at 123 Fourth Street. For just $1 a night, travelers found a place to rest, share chores, and swap stories—a tradition we continue today.

Over the decades, our hostel evolved, moving from the Methodist parsonage to the Northern Light United Church’s basement, and finally settling into a historic home in 1985. Originally built in 1937 by Dr. William and Dorothy Whitehead, this house at 11th and B Streets was remodeled with the help of dedicated volunteers and committee members like Bob Butts, Pat Gorman, and the Maiers. It now accommodates up to 49 guests, preserving its legacy as a gathering place for connection and community.

Our nonprofit mission has been sustained by generations of houseparents—RuthAnn Bowman, Susi and Paul Doyle, Katie McCormick, and others—and sponsors like the Ecumenical Committee and Juneau Area Churches. Despite challenges like limited facilities in our early years, travelers have always appreciated our warmth, calling us “one of the nicest and roomiest hostels in Alaska.”

We’re proud to keep our doors open through community support. You can help us continue providing affordable stays by donating via PayPal or contributing to our Amazon Wish List.
